FR/FB & SPT Validation Trials Planning and Integration of DevPs/IITA/ARI workshop in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (5th to 8th June, 2018)

Cassava Adding Value in Africa (CAVA II) project in conjunction with MEDA Tanzania are hosting ACAI East African team in Dar Es Salaam in a workshop to discuss the implementation schedule for the validation of the ACAI Decision Support Tools and integration of the partners in the co-developing process of the tools. The rest of the ACAI team include IITA, ARI, FJS and Minjingu. The discussions are centred around Various aspects of the implementation process, accelerating the promotion, adoption and sustainability of the DSTs within the cassava value chain systems, co-development of the DSTs with the development partners and the way forward on the remaining project research/technology generation The team will also review the result tracker and the progress towards delivery of the DSTs of the end users as well agree on roles, responsibilities, timetable and contributions expected from development partners, NARS and IITA

DSSAT modelling Training – Ibadan Nigeria (5th Feb – 9th March)

ACAI Project team organised an inhouse DSSAT modelling training at IITA Ibadan Campus from 05 March to 09 MarKilimach 2018. The workshop was organised around three main objectives; To understand the ACAI database structure How to acquire data from ODK and make it ready for analysis Identify data needs for the development of the Decision Support Tools The team led by Dr Meklit Chernet and Dr Guillaume Ezui reviewed protocols in used and split into respective groups to update them to the lasted versions. Sessions also included a discussion and learning on how clean /polish and organize data from ODK as well as data management especially in relation to modelling. Dr Pieter Pypers conducted a training on developing XML for data capturing in ONA. (developing the forms from scratch to uploading for application.) Other topics covered included; modelling, automation of data archiving and curation and practical handling of data from field trials

Inhouse Planning Meeting for Nigeria – Ibadan Nigeria (7th – 8th Feb)

ACAI Nigeria team consisting of the IITA scientists, Implementation partners, Development partners, Research students etc. converged at IITA, Ibadan HQ to plan the 2018 implementation activities on the 7 th and 8 th February 2018. The agenda included reviewing the status of research activities from the previous season and planning for the establishment of validation trials. The discussed methodology and modalities of carrying out the baseline survey and hiring enumerators. The National Root Crops Research Institute and the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta unveiled their workplan on various respective trials and training of extension agents within their networks. The team jointly discussed data collection, sample analyses, use of the open data kit ODK, and the challenges being faced at different levels within the project and how to address them ACAI students made presentations about their on-going research activities in their respective fields as well their workplan for the 2018 cropping season.

ACAI Project planning meeting – Nairobi Kenya (30th Jan – 2nd Feb)

ACAI management team met in Nairobi from January 30 th to February 2 nd for strategic discussions around project implementation in 2018. The meeting was attended by ACAI core team from IITA, representatives from the National Research Institutions from Nigeria and Tanzania as well the projects strategic Partners. The discussions included; A review of the project logframe and delivery of results with the set timelines Organization and implementation of validation trials Drawing workplan per workstream for 2018 Engaging and ensuring active participation of primary partners Preparations for baseline survey Project Staff structure Other issues discussed include budgeting, ACAI students progress, project training and facilitation of training activities in the field, development of concise communication strategy with a designate flow of information. The meeting included team building activities and a nature walk to the Kilimambogo Hills.
